Says Telephony Online:
Tweaks to the HSPA network will bring 3G capacity up to 7.2 Mb/s even before AT&T implements next-gen wireless technologies
So this is something I am looking forward to. If the wireless carriers could ever get enough backbone bandwidth in place to handle the influx of people dropping their wired internet connections it could be the next breakthrough in technology. If I could get a 10 meg wireless connection that I could take with me when I leave home, I would seriously consider dropping my cable internet. I’m sure even the possibility of doing this is several years away at this point.
There is some confusion out there right now as to whether the iPhone 3G (my current cell) can support the 7.2 MB links as is or if it will be in the next version of iPhone hardware.
Ryan Block says that current hardware can indeed support this speed. Many others disagree.
